Endless winding roads climbing through mountains leading to crystal clear lakes and blue sky’s. The natural unspoiled beauty of that is the South Island has finally arrived.
Max, our mate we met back in Rotorua checked into our room on our second last night in Wellington. We had made plans to spend the last couple nights of 2014 together a few weeks ago, or maybe a month ago now that I think about it. We had planned to show him the best 2 day, cole’s-notes version of the city as possible, but thanks to uncooperative weather we would end up spending most that time sharing stories of the past weeks. Whatever, “sweet as”.
On new years day we would all set sail together via the Inter Islander ferry to the much anticipated South Island. Here we would spend our first 3 days of the new year snaking our way through the never ending winding roads of the Marlborough Sounds in the “ghost mobile,” camping in a different, yet equally as beautiful campsites each night stretching from Picton to Nelson. Waking up each morning to birds chirping and the sun shining, crawling out of the tent to postcard-perfect views.

After getting a small taste of the true beauty of the South Island and what it has to offer, it’s safe to say we will be camping again. Until then, we part ways with Max once again and continue our journey of the South Island in a small town in the Golden Bay by the name of Takaka, where we have found a host, also named Kevin, who is willing to take us into his home for a week in exchange for a few days worth of work in his fruit and vegetable gardens.
Farming isn’t necessarily something we predicted our futures would hold for us all those months ago, but to have the opportunity to wake up and try something new each and every day, to open ourselves up, break out of our comfort zones and just say yes, has been our approach since day 1. Having nothing but time on our side has aloud us to explore and challenge ourselves. Whether its facing our fears by jumping off a bridge, or something as simple as reading a book. There’s a whole world out there to discover, and a little freedom goes a long way.
